While Sophie doesn't believe this, everyone else does, and she has to show that she has to prove that she can train and protect this creature. If she fails, the council will give the alicorn to the Hekses, which is what Sophie does not want. Therefore she has to train and protect it to let it to go the sanctuary, which is like a safehouse for animals. Although the Hekses are not the only problem. Her kidnappers are on the tips of their toes using everything they have to get the alicorn, now named Silveny. If they capture the precious alicorn, they may finally have the means to control the council. Besides Silveny, she also has other issues, the council orders a mind break on Fintan, and Alden chooses Sophie to be his guide. Things go horribly wrong during the mind break, and Alden is injured, and healed, but he seems to be falling apart again. Sophie needs to save him before time runs out for her fatherly-figure. As if things weren't bad enough, the Black Swan, the organization who created Sophie, sends her and Keefe a message with an answer to a question that she has been wondering the answer to for a while. Sophie's impenetrable mind has fractured and is falling apart, but they may have a cure. May. With the stakes higher than ever, will the Black Swan save Sophie, or will the Elven world crumble before their eyes? This book is full of plot twists, emotional moments, action, fantasy, that special tint of romance, and the occasional Keefe joke that makes you laugh. It will keep you on the tips of your toes wanting more. Read the sequel to the Keeper of the Lost Cities book, Exile.
What I liked: First of all, the book has so much content in it, it is purely amazing and it never gets boring to read. Shannon Messenger never disappoints. It was always interesting, and the book makes you want to keep reading till your done and still want more (In which case you can because there are two more books in the series until Lodestar, the last and fifth book comes out) Usually at this point everything feels settled in and predictable, but at this point it still feels like the first book, in which case they keep introducing things to the story. It isn't stories in the same world like other books, it's just one story within the ever-expanding fantasy world. Another great thing about fantasy books, it is like a whole other universe you can go to, because it's well, fantasy! The boundaries here don't exist, and thats what keeps it interesting and unpredictable, which makes it all more exciting, and craving. Everything in this book was perfect except one part as far as the book goes. I also loved the ending because I'm a big Sophitz fan :)
What I disliked: There is nothing much to dislike about any of the books in the series, but this one had one particular flaw. Parts of the books were like filler chapters in fan fictions, they do their purpose but are boring to read. What this means is it isn't that bad the first time reading it, but if you ever re-read the book, you're generally going to want to skip around. This is the only thing I disliked about the book, but it was a bit necessary, because books can't be all action, so good writing points, but negative points for the interesting. Great book anyways!
The overall rating: A 9.5/10
Why you might ask? The reason is, is that the filler parts played a decently big role in the book, so -.5 for that, but without the filler parts the book would probably be a 9.8 or even a 9.9 on the scale!
Related: The whole KOTLC series: Keeper of the Lost Cities, Everblaze, Neverseen and (Coming Soon) Lodestar. Otherwise I haven't seen anything like this which is a good thing because it means it is very original.
